Nesbo always seems to manage a new twist and turn in Harry's life as a man and cop. As I write this review, I’ve already read Nesbø’s newest - and arguably best - crime novel KNIFE twice, and between me and you, I’ll probably read it again before the year is out.
And a father to Oleg, the introverted, serious boy that Harry had grown to love as his own son. I think some people will still love it. I can’t control anything. From battling his demons with alcohol abuse, to hunting and being hunted by some really prolific serial killers - Harry has been brooding over the gritty and often paradoxical streets of Oslo for so long, it's always difficult to imagine what he can face next in his journey that would still feel fresh to dedicated readers. Harry has fallen off the band-wagon. Though the aftermath is somewhat too fictional and too good to be true. Based on this book, Harry is a morose drunk and a major asshole. But when she finds out that the body of a black woman, Cleo Sherwood, has been discovered in a fountain, and that no one else seems to care, she starts to investigate, using every tool at her disposal to pick away at the dangerous secrets and closed ranks that surround this story. As an author, he's not afraid to take chances with Harry or other familiar characters in the Hole books, and his ability to do so keeps readers perpetually guessing and entertained. But unlike some recurring characters each Hole book is a standalone masterpiece which you can enjoy whether you have re. Now if I could just get the author to use American names for most of his characters his books would be absolutely perfect. Some parts were satisfying but, in general, this book is like finding out that a very old friend is having the worst time. It was full of surprises and many, many red herrings as Harry followed first one suspect and then another. Not the first time I was wrong. Jo Nesbo. Happily unaware of what was going to happen, but unhappily aware that something was bound to, that he wasn’t made to be this happy. It served it's purpose but I have to tell you I had a hard time finishing it. These are people committing dreadful crimes – crimes they are horrified by – but they carry them out nonetheless.
At least the ambiguous ending suggests a “to be continued” line.

Complex "locked room" murder mystery by the very talented Jo Nesbo was good but 100 pages too long.
