Spells can be crafted by bottling ice, fire, and lightning harvested from elemental springs in dungeons and the overworld, and you can also combine these elements with items for increased potency and extra status effects, the tradeoff being that you're sacrificing valuable commodities in the process--spells are consumables, not permanent abilities.
It's possibly the shared themes of camaraderie, high fantasy, and discovery. Maybe it's the turn-based, yet action-infused, combat. Of course, classic Final Fantasy tracks are used liberally throughout the experience.
And don't be fooled by the "attire" menu; no one sells clothing in the game, meaning you're stuck with your initial set--two per character, or four, if you count optional jackets--until you unlock a third outfit at the end. For all its flaws – the dodgy camera, the lack of dungeon save points, the magic system, the bitty, oddly-structured plot – Final Fantasy 15 is the best single-player Final Fantasy in a decade. Sure, crafting and gathering may not seem all that exciting, but each of these trades can be leveled to 80 like combat jobs, and have some extremely lucrative incentives at higher levels, making them well worth undertaking.

Yet there’s something really engaging and deeply satisfying about FFXV that leaves you feeling that if Final Fantasy hasn’t quite rediscovered its mojo, it’s at least found a map that tells it where its mojo is.
