Keyes’ prose is elegant, sophisticated and (of course) witty. Grown Ups is a warm-hearted, wise and highly entertaining portrayal of how families behave; of our tendency to idealise the notion of extended family gatherings, and of the love and tolerance required to sustain our closest relationships.” —The Guardian“Beautifully drawing an extended family that’s beset by rubbish parents (each of the brothers struggles with the legacy of their critical mum and dad), complex behaviours (overspending, cheating, bulimia) and the natural disorder that comes with being each other’s nearest and dearest, this is Keyes at her best: capturing everyday voices with humour and empathy with writing that you’ll devour in a weekend. I own and have (mostly) unreservedly loved her books, I follow her on Twitter and I went to see her in London last week where she was as funny, thoughtful and endearing as ever..But (unfortunately) I don’t think this is one of her better books. Almost every one of her characters is loveable and infuriating in equal measure, much like the people we would chose for our friends and family. That fateful dinner, which I initially read with mild interest, becomes fraught with tension. .
There is plenty to see as the Caseys are a sociable crowd inclined to partake of dinner parties, extravagent weekends away and meet-ups. In Marian Keyes's sparkling comedy, one woman's concussion leads to an outpouring of long-contained gripes and secrets, calling into question just how civilised and 'grown-up' any of us actually are. Although there’s still a lot of witty sensitive insight into real people’s lives, travails, and predicaments, this book would have been improved by some judicious editing, a less clunky plot timeline and some better route through the maelstrom of characters and generations. More, I have loved Marian’s writing since I read my first of her books, Sushi for Beginners almost 20 years ago. It was published in Ireland in 1995, where it was an immediate, runaway success.
