LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The International Space Station is expected to pass directly in front of the moon on Friday evening. This image shows it minutes before docking. The big event Friday evening and Saturday morning is the full "strawberry moon" and partial penumbral lunar eclipse.

We've witnessed other ISS moon transits before, including this beauty, also from Ingalls.
NASA photographer grabs rare shot of space station in front of moon Ingalls snapped the photo from the vantage point of Alexandria, Virginia. They face the blue glow of several touch screens that are a major computing upgrade from earlier spacecraft.
ISS Pass In Front of Moon - posted in Solar System Imaging & Processing: Tonight we had a rare occurrence of the illuminated Space Station transiting the moon.
The International Space Station is easily the largest artificial satellite in orbit, and over the past two decades, many people have made a hobby of spotting it as it whips around Earth at over 17,000 miles per hour (27,000 kilometers per hour). Ingalls snapped the photo from the vantage point of Alexandria, Virginia.
Surely the same draw will bring interplanetary tourists to check out Io's lava and crater-strewn hellscape. A very rare occurance indeed. This tool helps finding transits of the international space station in front of the moon and the sun. Last night at midnight the ISS passed in front of the moon from my vantage point. Nice catch, Tom and Jennifer. That's not water, it's highly flammable and stinky methane!Still, with hydrocarbon rain and rivers, this is a world that will be irresistible to future explorers. By the time humans make it there, it might be the best way to get around. Ken Lawson from Geraldton in Western Australia spent nearly a decade waiting for all the right conditions to coalesce so he could snap his stunning shot. Weather threatened to cause a second delay to SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, but clouds cleared and the launch went ahead. The Crew Dragon has a 19-hour journey to higher orbit to bring astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station. The Martian moon Phobos is the ideal futuristic filling station. This moon is only 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) wide, with gravity about 100 times weaker than on Earth, just perfect for stretching your legs and letting the kids try their hand dunking on 50-foot tall basketball hoops.
The perspective the moon offers as a background versus the ISS transit is remarkable. Really nice! Regardless, wherever you are, the full moon will be big and bright for the next few evenings and worth checking out.
The mission is called Demo-2 since its primary purpose is to test out SpaceX's spacecraft. After an eight-year quest, an amatuer astronomer successfully managed to capture a perfect photograph of the exact moment the International Space Station (ISS) passed in front of the moon. The Falcon 9 begins ascending seconds after ignition. Jupiter's moon Europa is quite different from Io.
The transit lasted 0.43 seconds, and 27 ISS images were recorded during that time. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, people space themselves apart using social distancing recommendations while witnessing the launch of SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. The ISS transited the moon on Aug. 2, … Transits are calculated taking into account atmospheric friction and relativistic effects aswell as optical refraction. The mission has succeeded so far.
Right place at the right time. It's been half a century since those first steps on the moon, and over four decades since a human last visited. Plenty of people were out in the dark photographing the rare super blue blood moon, but NASA senior photographer Bill Ingalls captured an instant classic with a look at the International Space Station crossing in front of the full moon on Tuesday night Eastern. At certain spots the hidden ocean erupts through cracks in the ice that would make Old Faithful look like a backyard sprinkler. Erupting plumes are even more plentiful on Saturn's ice-covered moon Enceladus.According to Veronica Bray, a lunar and planetary scientist at the University of Arizona: "The spray of subsurface water likely supplies fresh snow for skiing, snowboarding and sledding, and the low gravitational tug of a moon with a diameter six times smaller than Europa means you can take on steeper slopes and get more air. Who says Jupiter's moon filled with volcanoes is a no-go? For example, if you're up late along the Pacific Coast of Mexico, you should be able to catch the ISS cruising in front of that big natural satellite in the sky between about 3:32 a.m. and 3:36 a.m. Saturday morning depending on your exact location. The International Space Station knows how to deliver an out-of-this-world photobomb with a scenic shot in front of the full moon. Copyright © 2020 KABC-TV. Only about a half second! This big boy also orbits Jupiter, and observations suggest it has its own subsurface saltwater ocean as well. Just imagine descending for miles through a hole drilled in the moon's thick ice shell to explore its alternating water, snow and ice layers. You'd have a hard time making out either. It's a big, asteroid-like body containing plenty of water that can be used as fuel for your family spaceship. Many suspect that Europa's dark salty seas could be one of the best places in the solar system to look for alien life. NASA spots spectacular ISS transit across the full moon. The mission succeeded in delivering SpaceX's Crew Dragon to the International Space Station.
If that's the case, you might enjoy a view something like this as you cruise by Neptune and its largest moon, Triton, on your way to one of its most far-out and little-known satellites: Neso. The CalSky online astronomy calculator offers a handy map that shows times (all local) and locations where the ISS can be seen passing in front of the moon over the next few days. Come prepared though, even with oxygen this moon's atmosphere is still too thin to support life. For avid ISS fans, there are resources online to help you not only spot the station, but also find when and where it can be seen passing in front of the moon. Only about a half second!
SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft, perched atop the company's Falcon 9 rocket, takes off from launch pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station. It takes a lot of skill and a bit of luck to get an image like this.
