The connect to business route was offered to me when I started my third year at university. This route consists of having a ten week placement with a small organisation whilst continuing to study academically. I am studying Human Resource Management at the Robert Gordon University and I chose the route in the attempt to gain some real on-the-job work experience whilst still being able to keep in the routine of studying academically. I thought it would be a great addition to my university experience and hoped to develop skills such as communication, creativity, and business knowledge.
HR Hub Plus Limited was the ideal company to be placed with. On my first day, I started as a Marketing/HR associate. This was something I had not done before, however, Edward made me feel very welcome and showed me around the building, allowing me to see what the workplace consisted of and where I would be positioned.
One of the first tasks I completed, was designing company landing pages and newsletters, choosing my own designs, fonts, and structures. This is something I was not used to doing, but I enjoyed. I was encouraged to use my creativity, and this helped improve my confidence in using my own ideas.
HR activities within the company were continuous and I was able to apply my knowledge from university and see how it is put into practice in real life scenarios. Edward taught me how to use the different software for invoices, training, and the main HR system. In no time at all, I was sending company emails, editing contracts, and issuing training and invoices. In doing this, I found that attention to detail is one of the prime skills needed as small mistakes can have a big impact on the accuracy of documents.
I have learned how businesses market themselves through social media such as online videos, LinkedIn posts and emails. I had the opportunity to present myself in an online video regarding the benefits of online training, which at first I found daunting, but as I continued I felt much more confident and was happy with the end result.
I have also learnt more about myself during the connect to business route. I have found that I am more resilient than I first thought, and I can do new things that I thought I would not be comfortable doing or might find intimidating. This includes working with new people, learning new processes and being committed to trying to make a difference.
In conclusion, having a placement with HR Hub Plus Limited has been a great experience and I could not have asked for a better organisation to assist me in my learning. I would recommend the services to anyone who feels they might need some HR advice or support. I will also continue to utilise all the skills and knowledge I have gained during my time here, to assist me further in my learning and career development.
