So, in about year four of writing, I opened the narrative to the first generation—Kitty and Ogden—and really delved into their stories and lives in the 1930s in order to fully understand the lens through which they view the world, and through which they demand their children view it as well.

I willingly suspended disbelief, shotgunning the whole optimistic, meticulously researched story in one satisfying gulp.
She opts for the safe route, making unimaginable sacrifices along the way, especially on behalf of her sister, who finds the freedom to live the life they both wanted. And, as I wanted to tackle this country’s racial memory as well, how its half-truths half-remembered and certainly half-told, seem to echo the way the half-truths of family memory can create a false mythology — one that a family will live by, and bind themselves to — I was always interested in dramatizing a family who does not see the bars of its own history, thereby repeating the trap. For the relief ... the unbearable relief of an omniscient narrator." The family owned island on which much of the action takes place, beautiful as it may be, should in my opinion, sink into the sea....well worth a read.

Kitty, her father would brag, was “born a Houghton and married a Milton.” Theirs is a time when men lead and women tend and Ogden and Kitty fulfill their roles splendidly. Each generation of Milton struggles in its own way to uphold the family image. The novel offers insight into a country with a complicated history of its own, one of capitalism built upon corruption, of privilege built upon oppression.
the characters who feel the most inward desire to accomplish personal ethical and societal change. I didn’t, but now you know the spell this author can cast. There, the Miltons and their descendants will "summer" for decades to come. They discover that their childhood memories of summers on the island and the memories passed along to them by their parents and grandparents might not always be accurate. We understand that she and her family are going to be sharing the island with Charlie, Len Levy’s acknowledged child and her half-brother, as equally ignorant of her parentage as she is. Or: Too complicated when I’m reading on a screen.

I wasn't remotely interested in the characters or what happened to them. She becomes obsessed: with drinking beer, brewing beer, making sure the beer she makes is on tap at every tavern and roadhouse within a day’s drive.
And it will haunt Kitty Milton for the rest of her life.
